Commercial Insurance Explained

Surety Bonds - A surety bond is a contract between at least three parties: the obligee: the principal (You as the contractor): the primary party who will perform the contractual obligation, the party who is the recipient of an obligation (i.e. the homeowner), and the surety(typically the contactor licensing board for the city/state): who assures the obligee that the principal can perform the task.

Commercial Auto - Also known as business auto which provides liability and physical damage coverage for vehicles used by your business. This includes cars, vans, commercial trucks, and other types of vehicles.

Excess Liability - Excess liability aloso known as commercial umbrella insurance provides additional liability limits over the underlying General Liability policy. These policies do not broaden the underlying policy in anyway aside from increasing the total limit available. Excess liability policies are purchased in increments of $1,000,000 and can go as high as $50,000,000 if needed. It's important to point out that these policies carry a Self Insured Retention(similar to a dedctible) that range from $1,000 - $100,000 so it's important to review this when receiving a quote.

General Liability - Also known as Busiess Liability or GL coverage provides businesses coverage for bodily injury, personal injury, product & completed operations liability and property damage caused by the business' operations. This type of policy does not however provide any professional liability coverage unless specified. In addition general liabiltiy policies are written on either a "Claims Made" or "Per Occurrence" form, be sure to discuss the difference with your agent to ensure you're obtaining adequate coverage based on your profession. Coverage limits for this type of policy typically start at $1,000,000 / $2,000,000 aggregate but can be increased or deceased based on your needs.

Inland Marine - In some referred to as a Floater or Equipment Floater this product provides coverage for business property such as tools & equipment regardless of location and while in transit. This differs from Business Personal Property coverage which only provides coverage at the specified location on the policy such as an office, warehouse, store location, etc... This policy can also be written to provide coverage for property of others while in your care, custody, control, this is often referred to as "Bailees Coverage".

Workers Compensation - In most states this product is required once employees are hired and may not be limited to w2 and/or 1099 employees. The coverage is designed to cover lost wages and medical treatment due to injury on the job, also provides employee recover and eturn to work services.
